Periodic Update
I apparently have issues with this whole "using LiveJournal regularly" thing. I do want to use LJ more frequently in shorter bursts instead of very infrequently in long bursts.

So, things of interest in no particular order:

  • I'm currently up in McLean, Virginia (outside of Washington DC) staying with my grandmother for a week. I've been doing this for a couple of years, and it's a good tradition--I don't see my grandmother very often, and spending some low-key time with her is nicer than the crazy high-tension Thanksgivings when we all got together (which don't even happen anymore

  • My cousin (who lives next to my grandmother) is having her Bat Mitzvah this weekend, so the family will be assembling this weekend up here and celebrating--I just got a bit of a head start on the visit.

  • I took the train up--it's pretty convenient for me, since there's a train station right in Cary which'll take me up to Alexandria in a mere six hours. Dirt cheap now (about $35 one-way). You have to have a physical ticket mailed to you in the mail, which is ridiculous, and there's normal power plugs for each seat in the train, which is great. Due to construction, the only train left at 6:15am. Fun times.

  • Instead of sleeping like any sane person on the train, I instead took this opportunity to catch up on some podcasts, in particular, the Dungeons & Dragons Penny Arcade / PvP podcast series, where the authors of the comics Penny Arcade and PvP come together (one for the first time) to play DnD, and you can hear their game-playing session in a series of podcasts (and a second set, airing now, with Wil Wheaton added in the mix). This is my first real experience to DnD, which is something I've always wanted to do but have never really been able to. If anyone knows of local DMs / local game stores or whatnot please tell me, 'cause I'm interested in a game.

  • Spring break was supposed to be my time to catch up on everything as well as recover from my crazy life at school. Those two goals are somewhat at odds with each other. What have I done so far? Done all my family's taxes, started looking into the investments my grandparents gave me when I was boring (there's some spare money that snuck out of portfolios which I want to reinvest), traveled up to DC, did some homework, am slowly working on closing all my Safari tabs (current count: 30, down from 50), am choosing next semester's courses (see below). Still need to do lots more homework, reply to a bajillion emails, etc.

  • Saw Entre les murs (The Class), the new French film. Won the Palme d'Or (first French film in 21 years to do so) at Cannes, already nominated for "Best Foreign Film" at next year's Oscars, and a really good film about a teacher of kids in a racially-mixed Paris middle school. Semi-autobiographical, based on a book (the main character, the teacher, is the writer of the book), the other kids and teachers are actual kids and teachers.

  • While it is totally awesome that my grandmother has wireless internet, her Verizon DSL modem + wireless router is pretty bad. Its built-in DNS server is pretty screwed up, and prevented me from doing my 431 DNS-sniffing assignment easily because it just flat out ignores NS and MX DNS requests and has set this lovely "domain_not_set.invalid" search domain automatically for me which screws with external DNS requests. The rest of the router isn't particularly better--it only does WEP encryption wirelessly, and frankly, the Internet acts a little funky but I don't want to try upgrading firmware and messing with DNS in case something horribly breaks.

  • I do like my job with ResNET a lot--I really truly helping people with their computers. I've also helped out a few of the OAs, RAs, and the CD, and I keep the printer well-stocked, so as a result the Cobb Housing staff likes me too, which is great. I do my job well and offer useful suggestions, so ResNET management likes me. Good situation all around.

Seems like a good list for right now. I really should post these as I think of them and not in long lists, but I'm working on it.

I use twitter, linked with my facebook status, as a mini-blogging / announcement platform (which you can also see on my website, which is newly redesigned with better colors!).

So, my current tentative / hopeful schedule for next semester:
COMP 530 Operating Systems (MWF 2:00-3:15, Jeffay, 4 credit hours)
COMP 550 Algorithm Analysis (TR 11:00-12:15pm, Lin, 3 credit hours)
HNRS 325 Dunlevie Honors Junior Colloquium (W 6:30-9:00pm, Kendall, 1 credit hour)
PHYS 116 Mechanics (TR 8:00-9:15am + lab + recitation TBD, Karwowski, 4 credit hours) (has turned back into "staff", and told I couldn't get into it anyway by Maggie)
Possibly replaced with: MATH 547 Linear Algebra for Applications (MWF 9:00-9:50am Adalsteinsson)
FREN 300 Review Grammar and Composition (MWF 9:00-9:50am Jarausch or (if I take 547) TR 12:30-1:45pm Noblitt, 3 credit hours)

At first I was looking at a fifth course, but it conflicts with OS, and then I was wondering "should I really only take four real courses"? Frankly, I've always taken five but OS is going to be killer, Algorithms will be hard but great, and Mechanics will probably be hard/time-consuming but great, so I think I can keep myself busy, and I'll still have 15 credit hours. :)

I finally sprung for PickAProf because I was trying to determine whether any of the Math teachers are any good. If the teachers for MATH 547 (Rozansky, Adalsteinsson), MATH 566 (Mitran), STOR 435 (Ji) or STOR 455 (Sen) are particuarly good, let me know and I might switch out French. Karwowski is supposed to be really good, so I'll stop putting off Physics.

What does your DNS assignment entail? If its just nslookups, you could do that from a different box (via ssh?) If you need to actually sniff DNS requests... hm, do you have root access to a box outside the network? You could tcpdump to get raw data, and then import that file into wireshark for analysis.
macmaxbh[info]macmaxbh on March 12th, 2009 12:12 pm (UTC)
I was able to get it working by manually specifying nslookup to use OpenDNS' servers instead of the local DNS server, and I agree I could have also used sshing or whatnot. It wasn't impossible, just harder then it should have been (and I twisted the assignment a bit to make it work, 'cause I assumed "no, I didn't get anything at all" was not an acceptable answer to the problem).

Max, first of all, I doubt you'll be able to get into Karwowski's course. You can't even enroll in it until the fall, during drop/add. I was unable to add the course during that time this past year, and I seriously /badgered/ him about it...

Second of all,...there is no second of all.
macmaxbh[info]macmaxbh on March 12th, 2009 12:15 pm (UTC)
Re: maggie
Why would I be unable to add until drop/add?

Also, it magically turned into "Staff" when I just checked on it, so perhaps I should avoid it again. Can possibly switch out for 547 with Adalsteinsson.

Re: maggie
There's a block on it. You have to add through Sally someone in the Physics dep't and she'll only add you if Karwowski will let her and he'll only let you if all the first years have added in the fall already and there's still room.

Hey there, I'm a senior CS major, I randomly found your blog some time ago.

My 2 cents:

1) I can recommend Adalsteinsson. I had him twice. Once for Calc 2 and again for Linear Algebra. He is an interesting Icelandic guy and grades well. I can also recommend Xavier Mela (I had him for Calc 3). Any one else in the math department is pretty much hit or miss. But stay the hell away from Brylawski. I had him for Discrete Math.... that was hell. Lets just say his class quickly slimmed from 30 to 12 after the first exam.

2) Be prepared for OS. I didn't get a chance to take it, but there is a reason why they bumped it from 3 hours to 4. So may really want to leave a fifth class open to being dropped if it gets too rough. :)

3) The profs I had for physics were horrible (Hernandez and Mersini). But my lab TAs were great. Your mileage may vary, but I have little faith in the Physics department....

4) I had Algs. with Plaisted. He was super easy. Let's just say that his practice exams were almost the same as his actual exams!

But if you ever have any questions, feel free to ask (bldenny@email.unc.edu).

Bryan, thanks for reading and offering good suggestions! I really appreciate it.

1) Sounds good, now that PHYS 116 is taught by "staff" instead of "Karwowski" I might switch it out to MATH 547 with Adalsteinsson, if you think he's decent. I've just had so many bad / acceptable math teachers that it makes me depressed, 'cause back in high school I actually really liked math, and now I don't.

2) Oh, I know it's going to be crazy. I'm deliberately only taking four "real" courses, as I was saying, because of that (the honors colloquium is only a one-credit-hour course). Still makes me a bit uncomfortable not to take all five.

3) Yeah, I've been avoiding physics like the plague because I hear bad things about the teachers and I don't want to take a 'real' science course. compsci is close enough for me. :)

4) Yeah, the reason I'm taking algorithms is because it's NOT with plaisted. I want to actually learn things in the course. If it switches out to plaisted I'm dropping.

And thanks again, and it's nice to meet you. Please say hey if you see me in Sitterson!

(been looking at your website. There's a lot of good info there, makes me want to make a real website and not my one-page jumping-off site that I currently have).
[info]clearthetape on March 12th, 2009 02:53 pm (UTC)
Shaddi and I both had David A. for 547. It was very easy, but I did not learn very much. That might be that class always. Also, some stats:
-I added that class 2 weeks late.
-I stopped showing up to class after Fall Break.
-I showed up to the final 15 minutes late (/this/ was an accident)

=> B for Maggie. Could I have done better w/o much more effort? Absolutely.
(Anonymous) on March 12th, 2009 06:46 pm (UTC)
It isn't to say that I didn't learn anything with Plaisted, it was just not very challenging with exams unless you didn't do the practice exams before or didn't attend class. You'll still learn everything you'll need to know: O(n) time, BSTs, sorting, etc. etc. His course page is here: http://cs.unc.edu/~plaisted/comp550/ In other words, an easy A if you show up. :)

But I didn't use the Algs book much either. Thankfully I bought it used... Everyone seems to recommend the book, but I didn't really like it. Especially since it is so big that I could kill someone with it.

Back to Physics: at least you don't *have* to take Physics 117 now (but I don't know if you'd rather take what the alternative classes are... bio, chem?). I thought it was much worse than 116. The only good prof I've heard of from the physics department is Rowan.

Sadly, you probably won't see me in Sitterson much, as I only have one final comp class to take (Prog. Lang. Concepts). I've been filling up the rest of my spare time with a history minor (mainly modern european history classes). Hard to believe I only have 30 days of classes left and I'm out of here!

Thanks about the website, it has been a work in progress for a long time. I've been mooching off the CS web server for as long as possible. You can do pretty much everything except mysql (the department is pretty strict about giving out mysql accounts/access), so I've been running my own mysql server on my desktop. So if you know some php, you should look into setting something up. Let me know if you need help, I suppose WWW programming is my poison since that is what I'm doing after I graduate. :)

Opps, I wasn't logged in. ^^^ that is my post.
macmaxbh[info]macmaxbh on March 13th, 2009 12:55 pm (UTC)
w00t. More stuff to respond to:

I've heard pretty bad things about plaisted from others, so even if you learned things from him I'd rather learn more things from somebody else. And I don't mind a hard course if I'm really getting a lot out of it.

Yes, it was a very happy day when I knew I wouldn't have to take PHYS 117--I know 116 isn't that bad, but I just keep avoiding it anyway. I'm hoping that my AP credit for chem/bio will get me out of the second physics spot, but apparently it might not. I'll have to talk to jeffay before I can register, so I can ask him then.

re: not being in sitterson: total sacrilege. :) seriously, though, more power to you with modern european history, which is something I'm also pretty interested in.

Hey, I've studied two european languages (french and dutch) here for a current total including credit of nine courses, and I'm not stopping yet. :)
I was hoping to get into an honors intro euro history class but it conflicts with OS. OS > most everything else.

I've tinkered around with webpages, and have taken both intro www programming and am in advanced www programming. I host all my sites on the local mac users group webserver. In theory I could get a mysql server there, but when I did a small database-powered website I actually just had it sqlite-powered, which was a good learning opportunity + nicely portable.
mandaria[info]mandaria on March 14th, 2009 06:13 am (UTC)
You sound like my roommate: classics major, now double major with french who has also taken some german and knows some basic spanish. He picks up on languages very easily. I was just happy to finish up spanish as quickly as possible.... I love learning languages, but not for a grade. :) I really would like to spend some time and learn sign language, have a friend at ASU who is taking a signing class.

If you are interested in Euro History, I can recommend:
Chad Bryant: I took Eastern Europe since 1780 and currently taking World since 1945 from him
Chris Browning: I took Holocaust from him. I would highly recommend this class to anyone, he also has a higher level class about the topic too (more focused?)
Jim Leloudis: NC History since 1875. Not European, but more relevant to me since I've lived in NC all my life. I've been learning a lot of interesting things about the state, plus a lot of it ties in with University history.

Yo!
Wow...this humanities girl thinks "Algorithm Analysis" sounds horrifying, but I'm glad you're looking forward to it! :D!

What's the colloquium about? Does it have a topic?

And have I mentioned enough how awesome it is that you did my taxes? :D
macmaxbh[info]macmaxbh on March 12th, 2009 12:32 pm (UTC)
Re: Yo!
Well, algorithms analysis is a pretty fundamental course for a CS major, and it's being taught by a good teacher (instead of the bad one that normally teaches it) so that's why I'm excited. It's okay if it sounds horrifying, although for me, personally, OS is much more horrifying (and awesome!).

Haven't heard yet about a topic for the colloquium--the honors department will actually send out all the course info officially (this is just from their website) on Monday, so by then they might have added a topic.

Yes, you did. And you took me out to eat twice. :D

(Yay, you're reading my blog! Are you reading it via protected RSS (I guess the same way we did Amanda's) so you can see my protected posts as well, or just normally?)
[info]clearthetape on March 12th, 2009 02:59 pm (UTC)
Any advice on classes /I/ should take?
I know I'm taking OS, and I would like to take Algorithms (750), but that still leaves 2 course slots open for really, /anything/.
I think I might take FREN204, and something else...maybe an English class?
[info]clearthetape on March 12th, 2009 03:00 pm (UTC)
Additionally, I have to take physics /eventually/, but I think it would be too much in the fall.
My Spring plan is much more solidified than my Fall plan (Compilers, probability, physics, one other course).
macmaxbh[info]macmaxbh on March 13th, 2009 12:59 pm (UTC)
You should pretend you're a first-year and take future perfect again. :P

Seriously, those CS courses are going to be killer but AWESOME. Like mine but more KILLER. You can help me with mine. :D

Will respond on your post.

Oh, also.
Did you notice the block on our registration? We have to go see a CS-advisor before we can register.

I have to see jeffay, probably you do too (looks like almost all the undergrads have jeffay) but you're not on the list?

yeah, i don't know what's up w/ that. i'm not on the "official undergrads" list either.
mandaria[info]mandaria on March 13th, 2009 03:51 am (UTC)
Oh, another random comment about the D&D:

I personally own the 3rd ed. books (Players guide, DM guide, Monster guide), but have never played a pen and paper game. There was no interest in my HS.

BUT, I can recommend some D&D computer games. If you've never played them, you need to pick up Baldur's Gate (1&2) and Icewind Dale (1&2). They are a bit old (BG is now 10 years old, wow), but most certainly worth playing. They are based off of a variation of 2nd ed. rules.

And if you want to go beyond that, I can highly recommend some literature for you. Pick up any of RA Salvatore's books.... he has a very large series based on a character named Drizzt (a good dark elf ranger). They are in chronological order, but broken down into trilogies so you can start wherever you like. He also wrote another series called the Cleric Quintet. He is also the guy who wrote the book on the death of Chewbacca. But really, you can't go wrong with many Forgotten Realms book. Another good series is by Ed Greenwood about Elminster, a very powerful wizard.

Anywho, I could ramble forever about this, let me know if any of it catches your interest.
macmaxbh[info]macmaxbh on March 13th, 2009 01:11 pm (UTC)
There was interest in DnD at my HS, but I never managed to get into the right circles. Need to look up some of those people and see if any of them went to UNC. :P

I have a copy of BG2 and tried to play it a couple of times, but for some reason I couldn't get through it. The graphics / tile system just really confused/horrified me and the battle system when I was attacking some rabid rat or something just was flat-out bizarre. I've heard it's really amazing, and will probably try it again sometimes.

I've played Neverwinter Nights / parts of NN2. I really liked NN, NN2 I didn't get too far in before RL took back over.

I could start reading Forgotten Realms books--I've read a couple of Weiss/Hickman Dragonlance trilogies which are set in a similar fantasy reality. Any recommedations from where to start in Forgotten Realms (RA Salvadore, I guess)?

The thing I really want to find a DM for, however, is just that I really get involved in the game I'm listening to via podcast; just the interactions between the players, between players and DM, the tension from the dice rolls, etc. It makes me sad I have to wait to next week to get my next installment (I've caught up on the weekly installments last night) I've read a lot of fantasy and while I love the role-playing part of it as well, what was really tugging me was the environment, the friends playing together, learning and reacting to the game and the DM.
mandaria[info]mandaria on March 14th, 2009 06:05 am (UTC)
Oh God, I grew up on DL. You'll pretty much love any Forgotten Realms book you pick up. RA Salvatore or Ed Greenwood are good starting points, but don't be afraid to just pick up any book that interests you, I've read quite a few from less notable authors in the genre and haven't gone wrong yet!

Ahhh NWN. I never got much into the newer one (but I totally digged the old one that was hosted on AOL a long, long time ago....).

You should def. try BG2 again. My only tip is to pause often. Usually the game flows around pausing, making a decision, unpausing, and then re-pausing when you need to order your party around again. The game has some simple AI scripts to make some of it more automatic, but most of the time you should be giving the big orders. And saving often is also another good tip.

The biggest difference in BG and Icewind Dale is that BG is more quest oriented, Icewind Dale is more hack and slash. They play exactly the same, it is just that there are way more quests in BG than Icewind Dale.

I wish you would post more often. By the time I finish reading your posts, I can't remember what I wanted to comment about. I hope you have a good time visiting with your grandmother! Your are awesome.
macmaxbh[info]macmaxbh on March 13th, 2009 01:11 pm (UTC)
Thanks, Noura. If you remember what you wanted to post about, you should. :)

I'll definitely try to post more often.
